Christian-led early political movements that called for the democratization of the British colonial state existed side by side with traditionalist oriented movements that completely rejected the presence of the British colonial government in their territory but there were outside the traditional state structure. BPA's 'ranks were filled primarily by teachers, evangelists, writers, traders, clerical workers in the colonial civil service and other laymen sharing portions of a common educational experience whatever their degree of doctrinal commitment to the PEM
