Tras el fallecimiento de J.R.R. Tolkien en 1973, Christopher Tolkien dejó su trabajo en la Universidad de Oxford para dedicarse a poner orden en la enorme cantidad de manuscritos que el famoso autor de El Señor de los Anillos había dejado inéditos.
