Synopsis "A Heretic through the eyes of the Inquisition in 18th century America"
With the aim of combating heresy, the Inquisition was set up in Portugal in the 16th century and taken to its colonies, such as America, working through inquisitorial visits, with the help of commissioners and family members, where all the cases and the people accused were sent to the Court in Lisbon to be judged. We analysed a case from the 18th century of an accusation of bigamy against a woman called Francisca Maria. We analysed concepts such as heresy, morality, intimacy, marriage and bigamy at the time.
