Steeped in the first two years of the Civil War, no one in the small Texas town of Black River paid much attention to the savage murders of luckless young Mexican and Native American women until the daughter of a prominent, legendary Mexican landowner became a victim. Her brutal murder set off a two-year search for the serial killer team responsible. During the investigation, Ranger Captain, Alan Ford, finds himself struggling for survival against both the Comanche and the U.S. Army. The two-year search takes him through Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico and culminates after the first battle at Adobe Walls. Along the way, Ford becomes entangled in Civil War plots, Comanche customs, and the plight of Plains Indians that open his eyes to the catastrophic conditions and politics of the Civil War west.
