William Maccall was born at Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland, February 25, 1812. He received a Master of Arts from the University of Glasgow, then studied theology in Switzerland. He was ordained a Unitarian minister, and was active in translating and publishing several books. His works included: Hymns of Sweden Rendered into English, 1868, Hymns of Denmark by Gilbert Tait, Russian Hymns, 1879, and Christian Legends, 1884. He died Nov. 19, 1888 in London. This essay was found and published after his death.
