Die Lunge ist das lebenswichtige Organ der Atmung. Ihre Hauptfunktion besteht darin, das Blut mit Sauerstoff anzureichern, indem die eingeatmete Luft in den Lungenkapillaren in die Nähe des venösen Blutes gebracht wird. Während die Lunge eines Leichnams eingezogen ist, sich fest oder hart anfühlt und ihre Farbe verändert, ist die gesunde Lunge eines lebenden Menschen normalerweise leicht, weich und schwammig und füllt die Lungenhöhlen vollständig aus. Sie sind au erdem elastisch und ziehen sich auf etwa ein Drittel ihrer ursprünglichen Grö e zurück, wenn die Brusthöhle geöffnet wird. Die Lungen sind durch das Mediastinum voneinander getrennt. Intensivstationen (ICUs) entstanden aus der Notwendigkeit heraus, schwerkranke Patienten zu versorgen. Diese Patienten könnten aufgrund von Veränderungen der Atemmechanik invasiv mechanisch beatmet werden (IMV). Der physiotherapeutische Ansatz mit dem ZEEP-Manöver bei IMV-Patienten zielt darauf ab, die Atemwegshygiene zu verbessern, eine effektivere Aspiration zu fördern und die Lungenventilation zu verbessern.
