Synopsis "Anfälligkeit für Vulkanausbrüche auf dem Jos und Biu Plateau (in German)"

Im Rahmen der Studie wurde auch eine Datenbank des Geografischen Informationssystems (GIS) entwickelt und sechzehn (16) Vulkankegel auf dem Jos-Plateau und sechsundzwanzig (26) auf dem Biu-Plateau, Nigeria, kartiert. Die Studie bestätigt, dass die Vulkankegel des Jos-Plateaus im Wesentlichen aus vulkanischer Asche, Lappilli, Bomben, Tuffagglomeraten, Basalten und Schlacken bestehen. Die Studie bestätigt auch, dass das Biu-Plateau aus einem gro en Volumen an vulkanischer Asche und pyroklastischem Material besteht, was darauf hindeutet, dass vor den heftigen Eruptionen und zwischen den Eruptionen ein enormer Aussto von Asche und Gasen in die Atmosphäre stattfand. GIS-Analysetechniken wie Überlagerung und Pufferung zeigten deutlich, dass die Bevölkerung im Umkreis dieser Vulkane insgesamt etwa 1,5 Millionen Menschen umfasst. Daher sollte die Öffentlichkeit für das vulkanische Gefahrenpotenzial sensibilisiert und zu einer stärkeren Beteiligung der Öffentlichkeit sowie zu staatlichem und professionellem Eingreifen bei der ordnungsgemä en Verwaltung und Überwachung dieser Vulkane ermutigt werden.
