Synopsis "Association between Osteoporosis and Periodontal Disease"
The aim of this study was to assess and evaluate the association between serum vitamin D and IL-6 levels in patients with chronic periodontitis and bone mineral density levels before and after oral prophylaxis.A total of 36 systemically healthy females were selected for the study. Various clinical, biochemical and radiographic investigations were done. It was observed that with the increase in serum vitamin D levels, a decrease in periodontal parameters (GI, SBI, PI, PD) and periodontal bio marker (IL-6) was observed and an increase in bone mineral density (DEXA Scan) was seen because of non-surgical periodontal therapy and oral vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D levels increased both because of periodontal therapy and oral supplementation. An assessment of vitamin D levels, especially in patients with chronic periodontitis, should be recommended at the beginning of periodontal therapy as it could predict and reduce the possible progression and risk of developing chronic Periodontitis.
