Synopsis "AWACS Air to Ground Training a Need for Future Ops"
Today more than ever we need the most highly trained and proficient combat mission ready crews possible. Increasing technological advancement of the capabilities of platforms such as the E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) and the demanding operations in which it is employed require an increasing level of competence and proficiency to successfully complete the mission. During the Cold War, the E-3 AWACS was primarily designed to provide surveillance, early warning, and identification of the air-to-air threat. Thus, emphasis was placed on improving and providing the most realistic flying training. Training exercises such as Red Flag, Maple Flag, and Roving Sands were developed to allow aircrews the ability to sharpen their skills.
