Synopsis "Bear River"
The Bear River flows through a large inverted U around the north end of the Wasatch Range. In January 1863, while the Civil War was raging, an estimated 400 Shoshoni were wiped out by Union Soldiers while camped along the banks of the river. More Indians died in this battle than in any other Indian skirmish in the history of the United States. Many bodies were thrown into the river. The Bear River Massacre drastically affected the lives of the living as well - such as the few Shoshoni who escaped and the whites living in Franklin Settlement near present-day Preston, Idaho. One settler, 20-year-old Rachel Ritter, has only one child-an adopted six-year-old Shoshoni boy, Sammy. Soldiers out of Fort Douglas are poised to launch a surprise attack on the Indian camp. But Sammy is in the camp and Rachel has been locked in her own cabin, forced to stay there as the attack begins.Once free, galloping atop her horse, will she arrive in time to save Sammy? This fast-paced adventure/romance thriller will have you burning through the pages late into the night as the plot proves more complicated and dangerous than Rachel could ever imagine.
