It is an important cool season pulse crop and is also called Bengal gram. In terms of pulse production, India contributes about 25% to the total global pulses production. In India chickpea grows on about 106 lakh ha area producing 111.58 lakh tone with the average year of 1056 kg ha-1. In UP its total area is 6.11 lakh ha, production 6.84 lakh tonnes, and productivity 1120 kg/ha.
