Synopsis "Brazilian solidarity networks for exiles in the Southern Cone: 1976-1988"
The articles here reconstruct the trajectory of two important Brazilian solidarity networks set up to welcome and protect the thousands of South American exile-refugees who, fleeing national security dictatorships in their countries (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia), travelled through or stayed in Brazilian territory between 1976 and 1988. It focuses more specifically on the work of groups such as Clamor in São Paulo and Cáritas Arquidiocesana in Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the work of three great Brazilian Christian leaders, the Catholic Cardinals Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns and Dom Eugênio Sales, as well as the Presbyterian Reverend Jaime Wright, who, along with dozens of other lay collaborators, acted courageously in defence of human rights and in international denunciation of the crimes perpetrated by those regimes of exception.
