Synopsis "Care and Support provided to Children with Disabilities"
Home settings of children with disabilities are crucial environments that should be supported to bring about desired living conditions of children with disabilities. The study thus sought to understand the circumstances of care and support of children with disabilities within their home settings. The study took an interpretivist orientation, guided by a qualitative research approach. It used a case study design where key informants were purposively recruited, while children with disabilities and the caregivers of children with disabilities were recruited through snow ball sampling technique. The data collected from children with disabilities, their caregivers and the key informants was subjected to a thematic data analysis approach. The study findings show that; needs of children with disabilities stretch from the commonly known needs of children to those unique to children with disabilities, response to the various needs of children with disabilities is a matter of vesting particular commitments to caring for and supporting children with disabilities by care givers and other support systems; kinship ties are a valuable factor in meeting needs of children with disabilities.
