Synopsis "Climate, Weather and Ideology: Climate Change Denial"
Denial ideologues have succeeded in swaying the public about climate change, instigating people to, for example, question whether scientists agree on human-caused global warming (they do). They have done so with ideology that incorporates pseudo-science statements such as "the globe is cooling," "extreme weather is not related to climate change," and "all climate change is natural." When we actually look at the facts about extreme weather we find many links to climate change, although any one storm may be caused by a number of factors. Sometimes denial ideologues will argue that poverty and disease are more important but there will be no feasible solutions for poverty when climate change overwhelms economic development. There are examples of extreme denial - climate change is a "scam," there is "eco-tyranny," and the UN is "totalitarian." These examples show the lengths to which denial ideology can be taken. Climate scientists and denial ideologues dislike each other, and the quarrel between them reveals how science and ideology are on different planes. There are some actions that scientists, and each of us can take to combat denial, particularly among politicians.
