A prevalência da asma está a aumentar a nível global. Apesar da atenção que a asma tem recebido como uma questão de saúde pública no passado recente, há muitas questões sem resposta no que diz respeito à etiologia e prevenção. O trabalho apresentado na monografia identificou alguns factores que podem promover a progressão da hiper-reactividade brônquica assintomática à asma, estabeleceu provas de que evitar alguns alergénios de interior pode desempenhar um papel importante na prevenção da asma e destacou o âmbito do controlo desses alergénios. Espera-se que estas descobertas, juntamente com investigações futuras, permitam uma abordagem mais racional e científica da prevenção e prevenção dos alergénios atribuíveis à atopia.
