Synopsis "Dalmore Tails: Animal adventures on the Isle of Lewis"

Donald John Maclennan was born in a traditional blackhouse in the village of Dalmore on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis in The Outer Hebrides. The history of Dalmore and his childhood reminiscences of the village were recounted in his book Dalmore - Tales of a Lewis Village. In this delightful new book Donald continues his boyhood reminiscences but this time through the eyes of the many animals that lived on the crofts of Dalmore and those that came to visit. The Tales thus become Tails! Through characters such as Soho and Rupie, the croft cats, and Stowlia, the wise and faithful sheepdog, we are transported to Dalmore in the years just after the Second World War when the traditional crofting ways of the Isle of Lewis were still very much alive. What comes through in these stories is an age of innocence now almost forgotten. Iain Shoudie is the man who brings the stories together, the man who could talk to the animals. He was the Dr. Doolittle of Dalmore and through his conversations with his many friends the adventure and excitement of living in the old village of Dalmore and of wandering round the Isle of Lewis in bygone times comes alive once more.
