Mikrokunststoffe sind kleine Fragmente von Kunststoffabfällen mit einem Durchmesser von weniger als 5 Millimetern. Sie sammeln sich in der Umwelt durch Abnutzung, z. B. durch Fasern aus Textilien, oder durch direkte Freisetzung kleiner Partikel, wie sie in Kosmetika verwendet werden. Man geht davon aus, dass die Fragmentierung grö erer Plastikobjekte in der Atmosphäre die Hauptquelle für Mikroplastik ist. In abgelegenen Gebieten wie der Arktis und der Tiefsee sowie in Sü wasser- und Meeresumgebungen sind Mikrokunststoffe weit verbreitet. Es ist bekannt, dass Mikroplastik von einer Vielzahl von Organismen aufgenommen wird, und Laborstudien legen nahe, dass es negative Auswirkungen haben kann. Auch Co-Kontaminanten wie chemische Zusatzstoffe und Schadstoffe, die aus dem Meerwasser sorbiert wurden, können durch Plastikabfälle transportiert werden. Die Aufnahme dieser Chemikalien kann dazu führen, dass sie in Organismen freigesetzt werden, aber es gibt kaum Beweise dafür, dass Kunststoffe in umweltrelevanten Situationen eine bedeutende Rolle bei der Übertragung toxikologischer Wirkungen spielen.
