Synopsis "Doc of Aged: Memoirs of a Traveling Psychiatrist"
Humor, Pride, and Tragedy accompany this emotional ride through Dr. Phil Heilpern's personal life, emotions which intensify with his vivid descriptions of the experiences of the "Geriatric Mobile Screening Team." Travelling all over the eastern part of Suffolk County in Long Island, New York for fifteen years, a "trio of cynical idealists" responded to community requests to visit aged folks where they lived, in order to realistically evaluate their mental functioning. This trio, comprised of a psychiatrist (Phil Heilpern, M.D., ) a nurse (Pat Warner, R.N., ) and a social worker (Edythe Young, M.S.W., ) kept many of the suffering aged people in Long Island, NY, from being inappropriately locked away in N.Y. State Mental Hospitals. The reader will share the concern and compassion Doc and his cohorts felt when visiting these people, the so-called "Street People," as they spent much of their failing energy trying to remember "how to be what they used to be
