We don't have novels about LGBTQ people who are discriminated against and abused and murdered. This is the result of the publishing industry, but it is also a result of our writers, who hesitate to write about the real lives of LGBTQ people. We know we are being abused, and our literature doesn't show us LGBTQ people who rebel. The Earthrise essays explore the effect of that failure.
