Synopsis "Effect of Layered Ground on the Seismic Response of Buildings."
Unpredictable earthquake results in failure of structures. Therefore, earthquake damage should be carefully assessed for better planning towards disaster mitigation. Due to coupling of soil and structure during earthquake the state of deformations in the supporting soil is different from that in the free field. As a result, the dynamic response of a rigid structure supported on soft soil may differ substantially from the response of a rigid structure supported on very stiff soil or rock, so it is necessary to analyze the dynamic soil structure interaction under different soil types. Therefore, it becomes necessary to analyze the structure founded in different soil conditions taking into account the soil structure interaction effects. The present study focuses on the study of single 3 bay 5 Storeyr building and group of buildings with and without ground water table under different soil types based on IBC 2006 using Finite Element Method (FEM) PLAXIS 2D. In the analysis, the response of buildings at different floor levels in terms of Displacement, Peak ground acceleration, Amplification ratio and Spectral Acceleration are obtained for a typical earthquake loading.
