Armando Palacio Valdés (1853 –1938) fue un escritor y crítico literario español, perteneciente al Realismo del siglo XIX. Se dio a conocer como novelista con El señorito Octavio (1881), pero ganó la celebridad con Marta y María (1883), ambientada en la ciudad ficticia de Nieva, que en realidad representa a Avilés. En esta época de su evolución literaria suele ambientar sus novelas en Asturias. Así ocurre también con El idilio de un enfermo (1884), que es quizás su obra más perfecta por la concisión, ironía, sencillez de argumento y sobriedad en el retrato de los personajes.
