Adolescence!!! Can there be a more confusing time! This stage of family life did not exist prior to the 1900s and now, it is here to stay. There will be none more challenging than adolescence. Unless you have researched adolescent development it will be difficult to understand their weird, wacky, and challenging ways. Your once precious child will turn on you, disrespect, and hurt you. Unfortunately, it is all part of this developmental stage of family life. Adolescence can start as early as ten and continue into their twenties. I had worked with many teens and thought I had them all figured out. Yet, it wasn't until my doctorate research, in adolescent development, that my own ignorance was revealed. Unfortunately, in this stage of family life, ignorance will not be bliss. There is a price to be paid for our lack of knowledge, as are losing many of our kids, during this stage of development. They are rapidly changing, and we must know how to help them. My heart breaks for the parent who has lost their teen during these years. You don't want to wait until the damage has been done. If at all possible, strive to be proactive acquiring wisdom, understanding, and knowledge to empower their teen to greatness. Over the years, I have heard many a parent say, "I wish I had this information earlier." It's not too late to make a difference in your teen's life. Become an expert on raising your teen.
