Verschiedene Untersuchungen haben ergeben, dass bei Patienten mit Diabetes mellitus häufiger eine apikale Parodontitis auftritt und mehr endodontische Behandlungen erforderlich sind. Diabetiker hatten eine schlechtere Überlebensrate für wurzelgefüllte Zähne, eine höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit eines endodontischen Misserfolgs und eine höhere Inzidenz einer anhaltenden chronischen apikalen Parodontitis. Eine höhere Prävalenz der apikalen Parodontitis, mehr endodontische Behandlungen und eine schlechtere Prognose für endodontische Behandlungen, die sich in einem erhöhten Verhältnis zwischen apikaler Parodontitis und endodontischen Behandlungen zeigt, sind mit hohen HbA1c-Werten von >7 % verbunden. Der Zusammenhang zwischen Diabetes mellitus und periapikalen Entzündungen muss durch grö ere, prospektive epidemiologische Multicenterstudien besser verstanden werden.
