Synopsis "English / Albanian / Italian Dictionary"

This dictionary contains approximately 1300 terms in English, Albanian and Italian. It combines 2 of the top 100 languages of the world, English and Italian with Albanian. Although the total number of Albanian speakers is one fourth that of Italian, it is the second most spoken language in Greece (Arvanitika and Cham), Macedonia and the third most spoken language in Italy. With English at number 3, and Italian at number 23, over 500 million people speak one of these 3 languages. There are large numbers of Albanian speakers in the United States, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Canada. Some of the first ethnic Albanians to arrive in the United States were Arbëreshë. Arbëreshe have a strong sense of identity, and are unique in that they speak an archaic dialect of Tosk Albanian called Arbëreshë.In North America (United States and Canada) there are approximately 250,000 Albanian speakers. It is spoken in the eastern area of the United States in cities like New York City, New Jersey, Boston, Philadelphia, Ohio and Detroit. Greater New Orleans has a large Arbëresh community.Italian is an official language in Italy, Switzerland, San Marino, Vatican City and western Istria (in Slovenia and Croatia). It used to have official status in Albania, Malta and Monaco, where it is still widely spoken, as well as in former Italian East Africa and Italian North Africa regions where it plays a significant role in various sectors. Italian is also spoken by large expatriate communities in the Americas and Australia. It has official minority status in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia and Romania. Italian is a major European language, being one of the official languages of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and one of the working languages of the Council of Europe. It is the third most widely spoken first language in the European Union with 65 million native speakers (13% of the EU population) and it is spoken as a second language by 14 million EU citizens (3%). Including Italian speakers in non-EU European countries (such as Switzerland and Albania) and on other continents, the total number of speakers is around 85 million. This dictionary is extracted from our Words R Us system, a derivative of WordNet. English Wordnet, originally created by Princeton University is a lexical database for the English language. It groups words in English into sets of synonyms called synsets, provides brief definitions and usage examples, and records a series of relationships between these sets of synonyms. WordNet can be viewed as both a combination of dictionary and thesaurus. This dictionary will be indispensable for any international company doing business in areas where Albanian and Italian are spoken. We also publish a companion volume with definitions of the terms in English. Check our website for availability.
