Gelbfieber ist eine endemische Krankheit in den tropischen Regionen Amerikas und Afrikas. Die sylvatische Form wird hauptsächlich zwischen Affen und durch Stechmücken der Gattungen Haemogogus und Sabethes übertragen, wobei sich auch Menschen infizieren können, wenn sie in dieses Ökosystem gelangen. Bei der städtischen Form ist Aedes aegypti der Hauptüberträger und wird durch die Übertragung von Mensch zu Mensch übertragen. Es handelt sich um eine akute, fiebrige, nicht ansteckende Infektionskrankheit von kurzer Dauer (maximal 12 Tage) und unterschiedlichem Schweregrad. Sie wird durch ein Arbovirus der Gattung Flavivirus, Familie Flaviviridae, ausgelöst. Die Krankheit ist nach wie vor in verschiedenen tropischen Regionen Amerikas und Afrikas endemisch und enzootisch und führt zu periodischen Ausbrüchen unterschiedlichen Ausma es.
