Gold ist ein chemisches Element mit dem Symbol Au (von lateinisch: aurum) und der Ordnungszahl 79. Damit gehört es zu den Elementen mit höherer Ordnungszahl, die in der Natur vorkommen. In reiner Form ist es ein helles, leicht orange-gelbes, dichtes, weiches, formbares und dehnbares Metall. Chemisch gesehen ist Gold ein Übergangsmetall und ein Element der Gruppe 11. Es ist eines der am wenigsten reaktiven chemischen Elemente und ist unter Standardbedingungen fest. Gold kommt häufig als freies Element (nativer Zustand) in Form von Nuggets oder Körnern in Felsen, Adern und Schwemmland vor. Es kommt in festen Lösungen mit dem nativen Element Silber (als Elektrum) vor, in natürlichen Legierungen mit anderen Metallen wie Kupfer und Palladium und in mineralischen Einschlüssen, wie z. B. in Pyrit. Seltener kommt es in Mineralien als Goldverbindungen vor, oft mit Tellur (Goldtelluride).
