Gro druck Heine nahm nun zunehmend die Rolle eines geistigen Vermittlers zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich ein und stellte seine Position auch erstmals in einem gesamteuropäischen Rahmen dar. Für die Allgemeine Zeitung verfasste er etwa eine Artikelserie, die sein Hamburger Verleger Julius Campe im Dezember 1832 unter dem Titel Französische Zustände in Buchform herausgab. Sie gilt als Meilenstein der deutschen Literatur- und Pressegeschichte, da Heine mit ihr formal und inhaltlich den modernen, politischen Journalismus begründete, eine Geschichtsschreibung der Gegenwart, deren Stil das deutsche Feuilleton bis heute prägt.
