Synopsis "Gamblers Make Better Lovers (and Other Stories)"

'GAMBLERS MAKE BETTER LOVERS (AND OTHER STORIES)' is a collection of eight short stories. It opens with 'RATS ON RAMPAGE' where the protagonist jilted by his girlfriend ends up fighting with the rats in his shack. 'DOLLARS FROM LIBERIA' follows - a servant runs away with his master's suitcase but those benefiting from the ill-gotten wealth seem to end up in ill health or death. 'THE PROPHETS' depicts the chaos inflicted on gullible Christian families who would swallow hook, line and sinker the 'prophecies' of bogus 'men of God'. 'GAMBLERS MAKE BETTER LOVERS' is the title story and portrays the pathetic situation of a young lady inflicted with a severe health problem who is afraid to seek expert medical help for fear of stigmatization. 'A GIRL'S MIND (THE OMITTED CHAPTERS)' is a tale of two lovebirds, Eddy and Etido, who (with the backdrop of chaos on campuses and in the larger society) continue to keep the lantern of their love burning. Eddy is seen making a superhuman effort (unlike in the novella proper) to stay on the sane path. 'BRAIN SUPPORT' shows the mess in the country's education sector as it is becoming a culture for most students to cheat in their exams. 'LOVE MEDICINE' has the backdrop of Covid-19 and tells the story of a polygamist who asks a mason to build him a place for relaxation but his first wife thinks the second is behind the husband's move as she suspects he had eaten the second woman's love potion. The mason and labourer hear, see and think otherwise. Lastly, 'THE FUNERAL' portrays the stress an individual and families would go through to have or give their departed member a 'decent burial'.
