Synopsis "Genetics in Periodontics"
Genetics is the study and understanding of the phenomena of heredity and variation. A large number of genes are associated with many systemic conditions. Periodontitis is inflammatory condition of periodontium. It is considered being a multifactorial disease. It has been proven that genetic factors impair inflammatory and immune responses during periodontal diseases. Focusing on genetic factors, currently variants in at least 65 genes have been suggested as being associated with periodontitis based on genome‐wide association studies and candidate gene case control studies. It is important to understand the significance of genetics in periodontics.
