Raped at fifteen, then things got really bad. One chilly winter afternoon, Hannah, a brilliant fifteen-year-old living in a closed ultra-orthodox community, is raped in the back room of a kosher butcher shop. Unwilling to blame a homeless black man, as her parents demand, she runs from the community. Alone on mean and unfamiliar New York City streets, she meets Everett Talcott a pedophilic teacher at a fancy private school who teaches her the ways of the world. She exacts revenge on her rapist and now a rebel without a pause, falls into a life of prostitution, Serbian gangsters, and hard drugs, before becoming a loving, devoted mother. After entrapping a drug dealer, in a flawed attempt to save her son who has been convicted of a crime he didn't commit, she becomes a protected witness banished to a small Appalachian town so backwards that its efforts to recreate the biblical ark fail due to inadequate technology.
