Während Au-pair offiziell als Kulturaustausch betrachtet wird, zeigt die Forschung, dass sich Au-pair in den letzten Jahren stark verändert hat: vor allem junge Frauen aus Osteuropa nutzen es als legale Einreisemöglichkeit; deutsche berufstätige Frauen, um die Versorgungsarbeiten an Dritte zu delegieren. Der Wandel von Au-pair wird dabei als paradigmatisch für eine zunehmende Feminisierung von Arbeit und Verantwortung verstanden, ausgelöst durch eine Reihe von Transformationsprozessen der ost- und westeuropäischen Gesellschaften. Sabine Hess zeigt hierdurch nicht nur eine Reorganisation von Arbeits- und Privatsphäre. Sie beobachtet auch die Entstehung feminisierter transnationaler Räume als kreative Reaktion auf die Lebensverhältnisse in Osteuropa und die Einwanderungspolitiken Westeuropas.
