Synopsis "Greece: Status of Minorities"
Greece is a democratic and pluralistic society based on the rule of law and fundamental human rights. It is a largely homogeneous country; according to estimates more than 90% of its population identify themselves as Greek Orthodox. Greece's longstanding and categorical official position is that there is no other minority except the Muslim minority that lives in Western Thrace. Greece also contends that the Muslim minority, which amounts to approximately 100,000 people, is composed of three distinct groups: those of Turkish ethnic origin, the Pomaks, and the Roma.
