En 1813, a Phalsbourg (Alsace), le jeune Joseph Bertha est le compagnon horloger du brave Monsieur Goulden. Il est amoureux de la belle et tendre Catherine qu'il pense pouvoir l'epouser bientot. Mais, Napoleon ayant subi de terribles revers en Russie, relance la conscription, cet injuste tirage au sort servant de critere a un engagement de sept ans. Malgre qu'il soit handicape (boiteux, il marche tres mal car il a une jambe plus courte que l'autre), il n'est pas reforme. Il tire meme un mauvais numero et se retrouve pris dans des marches forcees a travers l'Allemagne puis engage dans des batailles particulierement sanglantes. Il sera blesse a l'epaule a la bataille de Lutzen, soigne quelque temps et renvoye au combat dans une ambiance apocalyptique..."
