Synopsis "In the Palm of His Hand"
Mary O'Shea's adventurous spirit is taking her farther from the things she treasures. Her family has escaped the potato famine that was just beginning in her beloved home of Ireland. They have ended up in a depressing little mining town in Wales, only her mother has not survived the journey. Mary's father, Michael, has shouldered the blame and his ever increasing drinking and gambling has jeopardized the lives of Mary and her sister Aubrey. To save his own skin, he has allowed them to be taken into prostitution, ending up in the seediest part of London. As despair grows, Mary refuses to give up on the hope that God will rescue them. Then one day, as she kneels to pray, she discovers a newspaper lying under her bed. She soon finds the answer to her prayer through an advertisement for mail order brides to come to the Pacific Northwest of America. But their journey is marked with danger. First, they have to escape the grasp of Ryland, the henchman in charge of the brothel. He is a brutish man who loves violence and is never opposed to using it against the women. But Ryland is not the only danger they encounter on this perilous trip to America. With danger lurking at every corner, the women depend upon their own wits and the protection of God to reach their destination. But as their journey concludes in Oregon, a new danger awaits for Mary. She soon finds that her new husband is not the savior that she has hoped for. As he rejects her, she wonders if God has also rejected her.
