L'endocardite infectieuse (EI) est une maladie particulière pour trois raisons au moins: - ni son incidence, ni sa mortalité n'ont baissé durant les trois dernières décennies; malgré des progrès importants des moyens diagnostiques et thérapeutiques, sa mortalité reste élevée;- ce n'est pas une maladie uniforme: ses présentations sont très variables, selon les manifestations cliniques initiales, la cardiopathie préexistante s'il y en a une, le microorganisme, la présence ou non de complications, et les caractéristiques du patient; pour cette raison, l'EI nécessite une approche collaborative, impliquant le médecin généraliste, le cardiologue, le chirurgien, le microbiologiste, l'infectiologue et souvent d'autres médecins (neurologues, neurochirurgiens, radiologues, anatomopathologistes...);- les recommandations sont le plus souvent basées sur des opinions d'experts car il n'y a presque pas d'essai randomisé.
