Il est universellement reconnu que l'Académie de Liverpool a échoué en 1867 parce qu'elle soutenait l'art préraphaélite. Christopher Newall, dans son catalogue complet de l'exposition de 2016 à la Walker Art Gallery, rapporte qu'en 1857 "les lignes de bataille ont été tracées sur la question du préraphaélisme et de sa légitimité". Ce livre présente une vision alternative et examine les activités de William Gawin Herdman (1805 - 1882) qui ont subverti et finalement détruit l'Académie.
