El investigador gallego Joaquín Caridad Arias propone y defiende un análisis del vocabulario vascuence bajo consideración latina con sustrato celta similar al aquitano. Se apoya para ello en la diversificación geográfica de poblaciones autóctonas en valles separados por montañas y la dificultad de interconexión entre unas comunidades y otras, verificable en la alternancia de dialectos -"prácticamente un habla por cada valle"- El aislamiento, en fin, de estas gentes refugiadas en un entorno montañoso frente a la invasión romana, así como la tardía influencia del cristianismo en sus comunidades y las connotaciones filológicas con otras áreas idiomáticas. Todo esto favoreció una asimilación peculiar de los nuevos sonidos desde el primitivo transfondo celta-aquitano activo en la asimilación del nuevo vocabulario romance. Antonio Domínguez Rey
