Arturito Cáñamo, alias Siete Patíbulos, con su apellido evocador de horca, se escandalizaba un día de que quisieran tocarle ( horror causa el decirlo!) la piedra angular de la sociedad, abolir la última pena. Con este título, Emilia Pardo Bazán abordó el asunto de la pena capital ?candente en aquella época, y vigente aún en ésta?, insistiendo en el verdugo como figura social, y en el hijo del verdugo como víctima de la misma institución. De paso toca el tema de la tortura, que tampoco ha perdido actualidad. La idea de que el acusado es torturable no se ha extinguido ni mucho menos, dice. Esta frase, más de cien años después, debería causar sonrojo al menos.
