Uno de los mayores desastres naturales en la historia de Cuba fue un ciclón que azotó a Santa Cruz del Sur, en la provincia de Camagüey, el 9 de noviembre de 1932. La velocidad del viento alcanzó cerca de 215 kilómetros por hora, causando un ras de mar o maremoto que penetró más de 25 kilómetros tierra adentro, matando a unas 3,000 personas, el 70% de los habitantes del pueblo, y dejando cientos de heridos y damnificados.Entre los pocos sobrevivientes estuvo mi madre, de cinco años de edad, su hermano de ocho y una prima de quince. El resto de la familia murió. Este libro se basa en los recuerdos de mi tío Angelito Álvarez.
