Egli era uno straordinario direttore spirituale e così, per suo suggerimento, non poche di esse lasciarono del tutto la vita mondana per partire per la Terra Santa e vivere, sempre con la guida di Girolamo, in alcuni monasteri, a quel tempo celeberrimi. Non mancarono le "malelingue" che accusavano il nostro santo di aver plagiato quelle splendide ragazze e le loro madri instillando in loro un'idea dannosa: la superiorità della verginità sul matrimonio.
