Ce roman, publié en 1877, évoque la tentative de Bernard Jansoulet, parvenu ayant fait fortune en Tunisie, de s'intégrer à l'élite sociale du Second Empire. Surnommé le Nabab, il se voit courtisé par nombre de solliciteurs tels que le docteur Jenkins, Paganetti, Moëssard, Cardailhac ou le marquis de Monpavon. Seul Paul de Géry apparaît comme son homme de confiance. Après moult rebondissements et coups de théâtre, Jansoulet est enfin élu député de la Corse grâce au soutien du duc de Mora. Mais son ascension fulgurante sera suivie d'un échec tout aussi soudain.
