Les Souffrances du jeune Werther fut le premier roman de Goethe, et reçut un succès incroyable dès sa sortie apportant de cette sorte à son auteur, du jour au lendemain pour ainsi dire, une richesse et une notoriété considérable, en Allemagne d'abord, dans toute l'Europe ensuite. Le livre fut publié anonymement et parut à l'automne 1774 à l'occasion de la foire du livre de Leipzig, et fit donc beaucoup de bruit. Aucun autre livre de Goethe ne fut autant lu par ses contemporains: le succès qui en résulta suffit à lui conférer une gloire annonçant les chefs-d'oeuvres à venir.
