Synopsis "Lest We Forget: A journey of migration across the seas in search of a better future"
In 'Lest we forget', Hasmita Shah charts the journey of her parents as they migrate from India to Kenya to England. Coming from a poor farming background with little formal education, she describes how her father arrives penniless to Kenya but with help from relations, soon becomes an astute businessman. The illiterate parents see education and schooling of paramount importance and therefore send her sisters for further education in England. When the political situation in Kenya changes, the whole family migrates to England, where they forge a new life for themselves. Growing up in a Western society, she describes her own journey of an identity crisis - initially adopting a condescending attitude towards her uneducated and traditional parents, she is eventually filled with admiration for the courageous steps they took and the sacrifices they made to secure a better future for generations to come.
