Synopsis "Leviticus: A Call to Holiness"

The Book of Leviticus is a book of meticulous instruction about offering sacrifices. Every command had to be obeyed. There was no room for human invention in the sacrifices or the manner in which they were offered. This type of strict instruction was carried over into the last half of the book when God gave the rules for holy living. People need to check with the Bible to see how well they are doing with holy living, because He tells us explicitly how to do it. If a person cannot remember what he is to do in a particular circumstance, then all he needs to do is remember the great over-arching rule of loving his neighbor as himself, as given in Leviticus 19:18 and 19:34. Leviticus is a call to holiness. It can never be a command, unless a person claims a relationship with God, then it becomes mandatory. He establishes this fact early on in Leviticus, that the offerings that are given must be done out of free will. Anyone seeking to live a holy life should appreciate that we are called to it. If we are called to it, then it must mean that God has chosen us to be holy. He has always had a remnant of people, a small minority, that felt drawn to live a different life from their destructive friends and family. They are not self righteous people, only people who want to please God. If so, they will find a home in Leviticus, one of the most neglected books in the Bible. For those seeking holiness, the issue of death must be dealt with. Jesus said that those who follow Him will not fear death. A worshiper in Leviticus saw his prized animal die at his own hands, and he was taught to identify with its death. Death reigned in Leviticus, because God uses death for His glory. It is through death that we come to identify with Jesus who died for us, so you could say that the Book of Leviticus is as spiritual as you will let it be.
