Besonders die Madeleine-Episode hat diesbezüglich weltweite Berühmtheit erlangt, doch das Phänomen der "mémoire involontaire" findet sich in Prousts Romanen mehrfach in den verschiedensten Facetten. Diese Arbeit analysiert verschiedene Erinnerungskonzepte bei Proust sowie die Funktionen der verschiedenen Arten unwillentlicher Erinnerung. Nach Proust ist einzig die "mémoire involontaire" fähig, die Leere der Vergangenheit zu füllen, das Kontinuum der Zeit wiederherzustellen und das Ich geistig und v. a. emotional in die frühere Zeit zurückzuversetzen.
