Nierenerkrankungen stellen ein Problem für die öffentliche Gesundheit dar, weil sie: immer häufiger auftreten, eine hohe Sterblichkeit aufweisen und die Kosten für ihre Behandlung hoch sind. Weltweit sind 10% der Erwachsenen von der chronischen Form der Niere betroffen. Bluthochdruck, Diabetes und chronische Infektionen sind die Hauptrisikofaktoren, aber auch nephrotoxische Substanzen. Diese machen 5% der Ursachen aus. Zu den nephrotoxischen Substanzen gehören Schmerzmittel mit einem Anteil von 20%, aber auch Opiate (Heroin und Kokain). Der Anstieg der Zahl der Patienten mit terminaler Niereninsuffizienz in Kamerun von 30 im Jahr 2000 auf 497 im Jahr 2012 hat uns zu der Frage veranlasst, ob chronische Tramadol-Konsumenten eine Risikogruppe für Nierenerkrankungen darstellen.
