Older Rocky is sent on a quest of self discovery to Italy and is told only that he needs this journey. Rocky meets a friend he knew growing up that he believed was killed in Viet Nam and meets a relative he never knew. He begins to train with a surprising new manager and fights bouts in various parts of the world. The ending is quite a surprise especially for Rocky. He simply never figured that fighting was only a minor part of his journey.
