જાતક કથાઓ પંચતંત્રની વાર્તાઓની જેમ જ પ્રાચીન છે તેમજ લાંબી પરંપરાથી પેઢી દર પેઢી ચાલતી આવી રહી છે. બુદ્ધિમતા તેમજ નૈતિક શિક્ષાઓની આ વાર્તાઓ લગભગ ૨૦૦ ઈ.પૂ. લખવામાં આવી. આ મૂળ રીતે 'પાલી' ભાષામાં લખવામાં આવી ત્યારબાદ વિભિન્ન ભાષાઓમાં એનું અનુવાદ થયું. જાતક કથાઓ ભગવાન બુદ્ધના પૂર્વ જન્મોનું પ્રતિનિધિત્વ કરે છે, જે ક્યારેક કોઈ પશુ-પક્ષી કે પછી ક્યારેક એક સાધારણ મનુષ્યના રૂપમાં હતા. લગભગ બધી વાર્તાઓ ઉત્ત૨ કેન્દ્રીય ભારતના પવિત્ર નગર વારાણસીની આસપાસની છે. આ વાર્તાઓ ખૂબ જ મનોરંજક હોવાની સાથે-સાથે કોઈપણ આયુવર્ગના વ્યક્તિને આત્મ-ત્યાગ, પ્રામાણિકતા તથા સત્યનો માર્ગ પણ બતાવે છે. આ દર્શાવે છે કે, અંતે અસત્ય પર સત્યનો વિજય થાય છે. અહીંયા અમે જાતક કથાઓનો સ૨ળ તેમજ રોચક સંગ્રહ પ્રસ્તુત કરી રહ્યા છીએ. આશા કરીએ છીએ કે, યુવા વાચકોને આ અવશ્ય ગમશે. Jataka tales, like the tales of Panchatantra, are very old and have a long tradition of being passed on from generation to generation. These stories are tales of wisdom and morals, written around 300 BC in a language called 'Pali', which were later translated into many different languages.Jataka tales represent former incarnation of Lord Buddha; at times like an animal, a bird and sometimes like an ordinary, human being. The setting of stories is mainly in or around Banaras/Varanasi the holy city in North Central India.These stories are very enjoyable and meant to teach values of self-sacrifice, honesty and truthfulness.
