My Ship Has Sails continues the story of Margie Mack's life that began in Through the Woods. Now living in Chicago with a mother and a loving stepfather she hardly knows, Margie makes the sometimes difficult transition from country to city girl. Set against the ambitious times of the 1960s, My Ship Has Sails recounts Margie's journey from childhood through adolescence living in Chicago. There she traverses the waves of youth, discovers boys, gets caught up in the British Invasion, and struggles as one of the few children of divorce in her new school, and, like all America, reels from the shock and sadness from the loss of their beloved president, John F. Kennedy. Through it all, her stepfather Marty is there-a supportive, loving presence who fills the void left when she moves away from her grandmother Cleo. When Margie's biological father reenters her life, it's Marty who helps her deal with the harrowing emotions she experiences, guiding her towards forgiveness and understanding. Filled with life, laughter, and the bittersweet challenges of adolescence, My Ship Has Sails chronicles a new and exciting period in Margie Mack's life, as a young girl who takes her first bold steps towards adulthood.
