Nora Helmer, Frau des Anwalts Torvald Helmer, lebt das gehobene Durchschnittsleben ihrer Zeit. In einem "gemütlich und geschmackvollen, aber nicht luxuriösen" Haus, das sich nach Puppenhaus anfühlt. So ganz unluxuriös ist es auch nicht - die Kindererziehung und auch Botengänge werden von Angestellten übernommen. Als Nora sich ihrer Lebenssituation bewusst wird - heute würden wir wohl von Midlife-Crisis sprechen - verlässt sie den Mann und die Kinder. Eine solcher Vorgang war zu Ibsens Zeit mehr als gewagt - eine Schauspielerin weigerte sich, Nora zu spielen; in England war das Stück verboten.
